While delivering value is important, forward-thinking project management emphasizes performance improvement. Tracking relevant metrics enhances understanding and facilitates well-informed decision-making for all stakeholders.
Regularly monitor metrics to analyze trends, predict project developments, and consistently evaluate project progress across various dimensions such as scope, schedule, costs, customer satisfaction, team performance and satisfaction, and adherence to processes/methodologies.
5. Build your own methodology
A current project management trend involves embracing hybrid models that combine attributes from different methodologies, such as waterfall, scrum, and lean, among others. This approach offers increased flexibility in driving project success by tailoring the methodology to specific industries and projects.
Learn about different methodologies, tools, and techniques, and identify the most suitable mix to maximize project outcomes. A tip is to use agile methods for project aspects that are more unclear or unpredictable, while traditional methods can be used for clearer components.
6. Work strongly on your soft skills
As automation and AI handle technical aspects of project management, soft skills become even more valuable. Stakeholder engagement, conflict resolution, change management, negotiation, influence, and other interpersonal skills take center stage.
Being culturally and socially aware, listening to and implementing team recommendations, adopting a servant leadership approach, fostering creativity in problem-solving, investing in relationships, building trust, and safeguarding emotional and mental well-being are all essential for successful project management in the evolving landscape.
